Description of session

Health Promotion 101 is an on-line, self-directed course designed for health promotion practitioners as well as those interested in learning more about the field of health promotion. Nine modules address the key aspects of health promotion theory and practice, including definitions and concepts, models of health, theories of behaviour, organization and community change, and health promotion values and strategies. Students will become familiar with essential health promotion concepts, and, in so doing, increase their capacity to promote healthy changes in individuals, organizations, and communities.
THCU's HP 101 audio and web conference series will support you in your studies by giving you an opportunity to discuss health promotion theories, concepts, and practice with colleagues.
Participants are expected to be familiar with the online course material prior to the session discussing it. We also encourage the use of a Reflective Learning Journal as described in the online course.
Participation in the web conference series is free of charge to people who work in health promotion in Ontario. We encourage interested applicants to register as soon as possible as enrollment will be limited to thirty people.

Each web conference session will have four components.

1. Infoscape

Everyone will introduce themselves and share one – brief! – media story about health promotion or a health promotion resource.

2. HP 101 Course Q&A

The web conferences will not include lectures on the HP 101 modules, but time will be set aside at each session to give participants the opportunity to ask questions about the material presented in HP 101.

3. Sharing Your Learning Experience

For the majority of our time, participants will share their insights on the course – successes and struggles – as well as their own experience promoting the health of individuals, organizations, and communities. These opportunities for sharing will be organized around the following exercises.
Session A
Session B
Session C

4. Feedback

At the session's end, we will preview the next session and related business.

These technical notes relate to the March 2005 event.

A. HP 101 Online

You will be spending considerable time on this site (http://www.ohprs.ca/hp101/main.htm). If you have difficulty accessing, navigating, or otherwise using the site, contact Namita Sharma by calling 416-408-2249 x242 or writing to namita@opc.on.ca.

B. Audio and Web Conference

The HP 101 audio and web conference participants will be linked by telephone and by an online application that allows remote sharing of presentations, documents and applications.
1. Check Your Compatibility with Bell's Microsoft Office Live Meeting
This web conferencing program requires no special hardware or software – just a reasonably current computer system. Our dial-in and high-speed users have both enjoyed it!
We request that you check out the compatibility of your system with the Live Meeting prior to the sessions. If you have problems, please use the Bell technical support. We will not spend any time during the sessions troubleshooting the technology.
If you cannot successfully test and log on, participation by teleconference only is fine. It would be best, however, if you were still near a computer so you can browse HP 101 itself during discussions.
2. Join the Web Conference
At the time of the meeting, go to [URL] and follow the instructions in the workshop participant package.
Alternatively, go to [URL] and follow the instructions in the workshop participant package.
For further web conferencing support or inquiries contact Bell's Web Event Support via e-mail at webconfsupport@bell.ca or by calling 1-866-861-2121 or 416-695-9871.
3. Join the Teleconference
Telephone number and conference ID information are provided in the participant workshop package.

C. Virtual Community

We have created a Learning Community for participants to interact in outside of the web sessions. Visit the HP 101 topic and introduce yourself, ask content questions, share insights and lessons, and provide feedback about HP101.
Visit, create a password, and participate! A tutorial for using our virtual communities can be found here.

Health Marketing is a multidisciplinary area of public health practice.  This innovative approach draws from traditional marketing theories and principles and adds science-based strategies to prevention, health promotion and health protection.  Drawing from fields such as marketing, communication, and public health promotion, health marketing provides a framework of theories, strategies and techniques that can be used to guide work in public health research, interventions, and communication campaigns.

Definition:
  • Health Marketing involves creatingcommunicating, and delivering health information and interventions using customer-centered and science-based strategies to protect and promote the health of diverse populations (CDC, 2005).
Health Marketing is:
  • A multidisciplinary practice that promotes the use of marketing research to educate, motivate and inform the public on health messages
  • An integration of the traditional marketing field with public health research, theory and practice
  • A complex framework that provides guidance for designing health interventions, campaigns, communications, and research projects
  • A broad range of strategies and techniques that can be used to create synergy among public health research, communication messages and health behaviors.
“So how is Health Marketing different from….?” is a question we are often asked.  The answer is complex because Health Marketing draws from many other disciplines, such as Health Communication, Social Marketing, and Health Promotion. Here are some points that may help put the term in perspective:
  • Health Marketing is not a term that is meant to exclude other foundational disciplines.  Instead, Health Marketing incorporates the theories, strategies, and core elements of other disciplines into its framework, as well as adds elements to other disciplines.
  • Health Marketing’s strategies and techniques are based in part on traditional marketing theories.  The basic elements of Health Marketing reflect years of evidence-based research that analyze the needs, values and methods of exchange for different markets.
  • Health Marketing is an integration of many disciplines and functions to meet the health needs of diverse populations. This integration is why marketers refer to terms such as the “marketing mix” ?
  • Health Marketing is a new area of practice that is still being refined. As the National Center for Health Marketing and other experts around the world continue to research and use this framework, new information, examples and theories will be added to this growing field.

Uvod
